Baby Colic Treatment - Finding a Cure That Works

Any parent who has ever had a colicky baby knows how stressful, frustrating, and nerve wracking it can be. Despite the fact that it is a very common and not harmful to the baby...it can make a parent feel as if they are losing their mind.

Colic is described as prolonged periods of crying and screaming for no apparent reason. It usually begins when the infant is a few weeks old, and lasts for several weeks...in some cases even a few months. Luckily, this condition is not dangerous to the infant, and they will continue to eat and gain weight. The cause of colic is not known, but some possible reasons for the incessant crying include: sensitivity to the environment, food (lactose) intolerance, and/or reflux.

While there is no singular "cure" for colic, there are some things that can be done to ease the symptoms until the child outgrows them. It may help to carry the baby in a front sling or back pack or use a swing to keep the baby moving. Some babies are comforted by continuous noise or vibrations from household appliances like the dishwasher, vacuum cleaner or washer-dryer. Others prefer being swaddled and given a pacifier. Taking the baby for a walk or giving the baby a warm bath may also be helpful.

If the parent suspects lactose intolerance, they might try adding lactase before feeds to see if this helps. Lactase can be purchased from a pharmacist, and helps to breaks down lactose in the body. Some parents may also find using low lactose milk formula useful. These methods should be tested for about a week, and if found to be helpful, continued until the baby is about 12 weeks old. At that point the baby should then be slowly weaned back onto normal milk over a period of one week. If the baby is breastfed, the mother could stop eating dairy products, or try feeding your baby a hypo-allergenic formula containing whey or casein hydrolysate. If eliminating dairy from your diet or hypo-allergenic formulas feeds work, you should talk to your GP about a referral to a specialist as your child may have intolerance to cow's milk. However, there is limited evidence that non-dairy breast milk and hypo-allergenic formulas are effective at reducing colic.

There is limited evidence that the medicine, simeticone, may help to improve symptoms. This treatment is used to relieve trapped wind. Colic drops or gripe water, which are available without a prescription have also been helpful to some families.

It is important to note that each baby is different, and what works for one, may not for another. Parents might have to try a variety of techniques before finding something that is helpful. Despite the anxiety colic causes in the home, it is temporary and will eventually go away as the baby grows.

How to Choose the Right Toys For Babies

Having a newborn child is an overwhelming feeling especially for the new parents. New moms and dads are gets very excited buying supplies for their new bundle of joy. And perhaps the most essential baby items they would first buy are clothing, feeding bottles, blankets and crib. However, there's no one who could hinder these excited parents to purchase adorable toys for their little one. When buying baby toys for your little bundle of joy, the most important thing you should consider is to buy safety toys.

Babies are quite delicate with toys and they love to put anything into their mouth, so it is very important to think of their safety first. If you want to shop for stuffed dolls or soft animal toys, choose those that are made from durable clothing materials. Other stuffed toys that are made of fibers or faux fur are not advisable for they can be hazardous to babies when inhaled or swallowed. Always think cautiously, do not forget to check the materials of the different types of toys to avoid your baby from danger.

Another consideration when looking for baby toys is, avoid those that have sharp edges. Do not pick toys that have pointy ends or anything that could possibly injure your child. Toys with small or tiny parts can be very dangerous as well. Remember, babies would tend to touch and taste them, therefore, always keep in mind whenever you shop for baby toys.

Consider to choose toys that have vivid colors and pattens to help your child improve his or her sense of sight as well as imagination. Colors that attract babies' attention most are red, black and white. According to research, these are more favorable colors for infants because these can help them focus on the object. Texture and other bright colors also help develop babies' sense of sight and touch. Also, toys that are musical or sound-emitting are also ideal for infants. Just make sure musical toys you want to buy is not sharp as your child's hearing is still developing, rather choose ones with sound or music that could calm, relax and entertain your baby.

Toy's size should be as big as your child's size, however again, avoid one that have tiny parts. Choices that come in sets such as baby gyms and play centers are great examples of big piece toys that can give fun as well as function.

Toys are fun gifts for babies, and as much as you wanted to make your child happy and entertained, when your little one's health is on the line, make sure that your gift - toys to be exact - is safe for you child's health. Apart from safe and entertaining toys to serve as your baby shower gift for the newborn child, you may want to give baby gift basket that is filled with different adorable items such as baby blankets, bibs, baby bottles, bathing supplies and likes. You can even include some surprises for the new mom and dad such as parenting guide book, spa supplies for the new mom, baked edibles and others.

Comfort, Safety and Ease of Use - This is What a Car Seat Should Be

I will unabashedly admit that this review is for a product that I literally fell in love with at first sight. Keep in mind that I walked confidently into Babies R' Us one day last year after having done exhaustive research on children's car seats and was prepared to quickly pick-up and carry to the cash register my first and only choice. However, I walked out with a model and brand I had not given any consideration to previously, which is extremely uncharacteristic of me. The reason for this change of mind and decision is described in the following review.

The Triumph Advance car seat from Evenflo catches your eye from across the aisle simply by its appearance. My first thought before ever touching the seat was that I wished it were made in a size which could sit in a family room and fit a grown man. It looked that comfortable even from a distance. And, upon further, detailed inspection, the seat pad and support pillows did not disappoint. When pressing on the material and padding, I found the Evenflo to have a much more comfortable feel than its competitors. Inevitably, with other brands, I would be able to feel the underlying plastic shell fairly easily through the padding in certain locations which I felt could be uncomfortable for baby but I did not find this with the Evenflo. By the end of the day, my son was strapped in and rolling down the highway in blissful infant comfort.

But my son was also riding down the highway in reassuring safety as well. Evenflo touts their "New EPP energy absorbing foam liner" as part of this seat and in my opinion, have developed the most user-friendly harness system available. Their "TensionRight" knob for tightening the harness with a twist of the wrist is a welcome change from the more standard pull-to-tighten strap design commonly available. Knobs are located on both sides of the seat meaning that whether rear facing or forward facing you can make your adjustments from either side of the seat. The "infinite slide harness" feature assures that you will not be required to reweave the shoulder harnesses to different heights as baby gets bigger. The shoulder height of the harness automatically adjusts and locks into place. As someone who dealt with regular frustrations of webbing twisting in the harness on our former safety seat, I have been very pleased with the twist resistant design and operation of the Triumph Advance.

Mounting of the car seat is uncomplicated and well described in the instructions. The body and head support pillows fit baby just right and are incrementally removed as he or she grows. Also of note is that apparently, building comfort into a child's seat does not necessarily mean that durability must be compromised. With over a year's worth of daily use, the material and padding have produced no tears or other damage and any spots or clean-up were easily removed.

Retail price is around $160 dollars and obviously in my opinion is well worth the money if you are shopping in this price range. It is not the cheapest or most expensive seat and, in many arenas is not necessarily rated as the "best", but if you give it a good look, you will likely be pleasantly surprised and swayed as a consumer by this product's unique features. Comfort, safety and ease of use - this is what a car seat should be!

Top Nicknames and Their Meanings For Baby Girls and Baby Boys

It is rather fun to look at top nicknames and their meanings for baby girls and baby boys.

We often think of nicknames as a part of our modern culture. But, in reality, nicknames go back many thousands of years. In fact, the ancient Romans were very fond of nicknames. Even their emperors were known by their nicknames.

Often, a nickname bears little resemblance to the person's first name. For instance, the nickname "Polly," comes from the name Mary. "Sandor" is the nickname for Alexander.

Also, many nicknames turn out to be so popular that they become independent names themselves. Two such examples are Gwen, which is short for Gwendolyn, and Manuel, which is a shortened form of Emmanuel.

And now, let us take a look at some unusual nicknames that you might like.

Nicknames and Their Meanings for Baby Girls

Nancy - This name comes from the name, Ann (Hebrew) meaning both "Grace," and "Mercy." The original name for Ann is "Hannah."

Daisy - This nickname comes from the name, Margaret (Greek) meaning "Pearl." The name, Margaret, was originally a Persian name meaning, "Born of the Moon-Light."

Lola - This name comes from Dolores (Spanish) meaning "Our Lady of Sorrows," in commemoration of the Virgin Mary.

Christa - Christa is the nickname for Christina (Greek) meaning "Follower of Christ."

Lily - This name comes from Lilian (Greek) meaning "A Lily."

Nicknames and Their Meanings for Baby Boys

Austin - This name comes from the name Augustus (Latin) meaning "The Exalted and Sacred One."

Wayne - Wayne comes from the name, Wainwright (Old English) meaning "Wagon-maker."

Zack - This nickname comes from Zachariah (Hebrew) meaning "Remembered by the Lord."

Kit - This name is short for "Christopher (Greek) meaning "Bearer of Christ."

Max - Max is the shortened form of Maximillian (Latin) meaning "The Greatest."

I hope you liked this brief look at some top nicknames and their meanings for baby girls and baby boys.

Names for children follow society's trends, music, books, and art. Therefore, it is almost sure that new baby names and nicknames will appear in the coming years and take the place of today's beloved names. Every baby name and nickname is a lifelong gift.

Baby Presents and How to Make it Treasured

Baby presents belong to such a category which are difficult to choose and always pleasant to receive. Almost always. The most difficulty is in the question what gifts for newborns you can present.

And the answer to this question is found in many baby stores on-line and not. These baby product paradises are happy to offer you a thousand of ideas for newborn baby gift baskets. Brand-new gadgets and multi-functional seats, convertible baby cribs and 3-in-1 baby tubs, expensive and inexpensive baby presents, cheap and reasonably-priced all these are available in any baby store around.

But how to make a baby present treasured and wanted?

I've asked several soon-to-be moms and new moms this question. And the answers are to present the things a baby needs most of all. And to avoid buying things that take much place and a baby doesn't need it badly. To the things "you should avoid"; belong big stuffy and plush toys. A lot of Moms agree on it saying that they are useless as at the beginning a baby just cannot play with such a large toy, and later it just becomes a place where a pet sleeps, or a nice decoration trick.

Also some too multi-functional devices which as a rule break down much frequently can be placed within this group of avoidable presents.

If you need to find baby presents soon but you have no ideas what they can be - ask for help for the most experienced people - your parents, or any parents you know. They are really experts in such question and can give you some very helpful advice. They advise you not only what you can buy but also say where, how to choose and how many you need. However, some of us are afraid to bother anyone and lose a chance to make most wanted baby presents.

On the other hand, your parents or grandparents feel proud and happy to help you in this business. They can even propose you to go with you to the baby stores and find the best baby gift basket available there.

But if you still don't know what to choose for baby presents, then the best thing to do is to present parents with either the certificate or make a gift basket for parents let's say fruit gift basket. Fruit are health-giving to mom and as a sequence to a baby.

Interesting Baby Boy Names and Baby Girl Names

Not long ago, one of the top trends for baby names here in the States was to give Irish names, both for boys and girls. Irish names were a big development in the US,particularly for boys. It's only been since the 90s that names such as Aidan and Declan have been common amongst American children. One of the reasons might be that the name Sean became mainstream in the 1980's. Parents are now reaching even farther to find Irish names that are unique in the United States.

But beyond Irish influence, American names come from a whole slew of cultural sources. Among these are: English, Egyptian, Czechoslovakian, Gaelic, French, Italian, and Hebrew. America has always been a melting pot of people of different ethnic backgrounds. As such a person's name here doesn't necessarily tie to a particular ethnicity; Indians give their children English names, Italian children are given Irish names like "Sean". And of course popular names are strongly influenced by the popular media- by celebrities and businessmen. Dylan rose as a popular name in the 70s, almost assuredly because of the influence of Bob Dylan the decade before. Here are a few popular or emerging baby names, their meaning or definition, and their ethnic origin:

Baby Boy Names

Green Names?

What if you want to give your boy or girl an environmentally-sound name? Perhaps there's some inspiration you can draw from some famous historical figures for this. For baby boys, think Henry David Thoreau. In this case, Henry David would be all that's needed to make the name recognizable. There's also Aldo Leopold, the author of the ecological classic, A Sand County Almanac. Aldo was an American ecologistand is considered a pioneer in environmental ethics and wilderness preservation. Another name that comes to mind is David Brower, an environmentalist activist who founded Friends of the Earth, the League of Conservation Voters, and other environmental organizations. For baby girls, one of the most famous environmentalists of all time was Rachel Carson. An American biologist, conservationist, and nature writer, Carson is helped increase environmental awareness around the world with her book, Silent Spring. The work spurred the banning of the pesticide DDT in the United States and helped spark the modern environmental movement. Also Carson makes a beautiful middle name. Another idea is Jane Goodall, a famous primatologist.

Here are a few more baby boy and baby girl names to consider (along with their meanings)

Baby Boy Names

RAHMAN- compassionate; arabic

A Cure For Nappy Rash

There are many causes of nappy rash, the most common being:

  1. prolonged contact with urine or faeces - when urine comes into contact with faeces, it results in the formation of ammonia (yes, the same thing that is used in some cleaning products) and this irritates the baby's sensitive skin;

  2. reaction to the chemicals (including perfumes) in the laundry detergent, nappy soak or baby wipes - all babies have very sensitive skins which are in contact with the nappies and wiped with the baby wipes;

  3. teething or weaning can cause changes in the composition of the urine making it more acidic - when a baby is teething its saliva tends to be more alkaline and so the stomach produces more acid to compensate; when the baby is weaning some foods may produce a more acidic urine;

  4. perhaps ironically, nappy rash can also result from keeping your baby's bottom too clean - while good hygiene is essential, whenever your baby's skin is wiped clean the natural skin oils and beneficial bacteria are wiped away;

  5. in some cases where the rash is particularly persistent, it may be thrush which is a fungal infection.

So what can be done? The following should not be taken as a complete list or the only things that can be done. As the parent, you know what is best for your child so the following is offered as a guide.

  1. Even though modern disposable nappies are very absorbent, they should not be left on when they have been soiled whether with poo or wee.

  2. If you are using cloth nappies, you can try putting a liner on the inside of the nappy to help draw the moisture away from the skin. Disposable liners can be bought in supermarkets or a cheap reusable alternative is to buy a length of fleecy material and cut it into rectangles to fit between your baby's bottom and the nappy.

  3. Increase the amount of nappy-free time. Fresh air helps keep the skin dry. You might choose to make nappy free time for a while after each nappy change.

  4. Try a different laundry detergent or nappy soak. Use those without perfumes. Try different baby wipes - in particular, don't use adult hand-wipes on your baby as these frequently have alcohol which is not good for sensitive skins.

  5. Use different (unscented) bath products or even just water. Little babies do not need a lot of cleaning;

  6. If you are using cloth nappies with waterproof overpants, ensure that the overpants are breathable as these allow the air to circulate.

  7. Use a nappy cream on the baby's skin to provide a barrier to help keep urine away from the skin.

Every baby is different - some seem to get nappy rash very easily and others don't - so there is no single solution that will work all the time for all babies. Having said that, one of the best products I have found for clearing up nappy rash is Simmon's Paw Paw Salve. It is all natural and contains no petrochemicals which is important to me. Putting a little on the affected area has it cleared up in no time. And it is soothing on the baby's skin. Paw Paw has so many health benefits it's not surprising that it can be used for this. Of course, this should not be taken as medical advice and if symptoms persist you should consult your health care professional.

By Kerri Byrne

The papaw (also known as paw paw, or papaya) has been called "The Most Wonderful tree in the World" and numerous health benefits are attributed to consuming the delicious fruit it produces. However, the fruit can also be used in salves or creams and applied to the skin for the relief of many conditions. Simmons Paw Paw Salve is made from fresh fermented paw paw which contains papain an enzyme that helps clean wounds. It may be used for the relief of: nappy rash, cracked nipples, dry skin, cuts, abrasions, gravel rash, chafing, heat rash, mosquito bites, open wounds, and insect stings. Once you start using it you will discover even more uses.
